We speak to the brand’s founder Fran Miller about social integrity and the importance of a dance break.

How did your interest in botanics and skincare come about?

I initially set out to develop the line 8 years ago with the aim of addressing my personal skincare needs. I had been struggling with a range of skin sensitivities and only began to find relief and results upon shifting my routine to a simpler, cleaner, more nourishing one, led by an intuitive approach. I found that my skincare options at the time felt overwhelming, complicated, ineffective, and/or unattainable and really felt that I could fill this noticeable gap for thoughtful non-toxic skincare essentials that also resonated with values of transparency, sustainability and beautiful design.

What is your favourite part of your process?

Working closely with plants and seeing how transformative and healing these relatively simple ingredients can be, reinforcing a 'less but better' approach. I tend to think about beauty in this very holistically timeless way that is more than just what you put on your skin, it makes the process so much more meaningful.

What do you feel your responsibility is as a creative practitioner?

Prioritizing transparency, environmental and social consciousness, and integrity. Making decisions for both present and future with care, mindfulness and intention. Always considering our impact and constantly striving to evolve and grow. Striving to maintain a unique, authentic voice and perspective in an increasingly saturated industry.

I tend to think about beauty in this very holistically timeless way that is more than just what you put on your skin, it makes the process so much more meaningful.

Why did you choose to focus on creating oils over creams?

A high quality oil blend was one of the first things I saw true results from, and my obsession with formulating with oils began shortly after. Plants can teach us so much and when used and sourced correctly, plant oils have a level of efficacy that's hard to beat. Oils are also incredibly multi-tasking, each with an abundance of deeply nourishing, skin-supporting benefits. They were a natural cornerstone for a line centered around multi-functional skincare essentials.

With global lockdowns taking away some of our usual routines and rituals, have you experienced any surprising additions to your life this year?

The simplistic beauty of taking breaks and forcing some slowness into my day. Going for short walks, a 10min stretch / dance break, just relocating somewhere other than my desk for a tea and a snack — all things keeping me slightly more balanced.

How do you fuel up creatively?

I attempt to clear my head of all the clutter. Reading, browsing something that does not involve my phone, grounding with scent & incense daily, warm baths, time in the kitchen, a walk through the nearby park, ongoing art projects — a few simple acts that I continuously practice when I need clarity and creative inspiration.

As someone who is paving the way for organic skincare, what is currently on your radar (skincare related or otherwise)?

The overarching idea that you can actually do more for your skin and body with fewer, more thoughtful steps. A greater focus on supportive, protective, nourishing qualities in skincare (and wellbeing in general) that gently help our skin do what it's inherently programmed to do on its own. Eliminating the excess and focusing on multi-purpose products that work for the individual. In addition to skincare, which will always remain highly selective for us, we’ve been introducing objects into our repertoire, an extension of my daily essentials beyond skincare. Excited to show our community more this year!
