Studio Visit with Olivia Moon, Founder of NODI Rugs

We revisit our dear friend Olivia Moon of NODI Rugs at her new showroom...

We revisit our dear friend Olivia Moon of NODI Rugs at her new showroom — a quiet and sundrenched space laden in texture that feels like a small retreat. It also feels like a new chapter, not only for the brand, but for Olivia too.

Having just welcomed into the world her second child, the business has entered a new phase and has, perhaps, become even more personal — a deeper extension of Olivia’s initial aspirations. Motherhood can leave one feeling sleep deprived, but it can also sharpen the lens on motivation and priority.

Tell us about your new studio space, and what it has brought to your everyday.

Our new showroom really feels like we’ve grown up and stepped into the next chapter with the brand. It feels like we now have a space that reflects our DNA — authentic, curated, natural and elegant. What it brings to my everyday, the biggest thing for me and what I love the most, is the natural light. The space is flooded with beautiful, bright natural light and it really makes me feel so calm and happy when I step through the door. This, paired with all the natural materials in the space - timber floors, plants, natural rugs, soft linens, is a space that really feels like home and is the perfect canvas for showcasing the rugs. It’s also in walking distance from my house, I love not having to get in my car anymore.

Thoughts on what a rug can and should achieve in:

the bedroom… Warmth. A rug in the bedroom should add a layer of texture and soften the room to help make it feel like a safe nest.

the living space… A rug should be an anchor in the living room, whilst creating disconnect from the outer world. It should create a place of connection with oneself and others.

the dining room… A rug in the dining room should define the area and house the whole dining setting (chairs fully on the rug once pulled out from the table.)

The space is flooded with beautiful, bright natural light and it really makes me feel so calm and happy when I step through the door.

Can you give us a little insight to how the braided jute rugs are made?

They’re made using hand-spun all-natural jute (which is a plant that grows in West Bengal). The jute yarn is first combed by hand to remove the hard husks and low quality jute and then spun by hand which gives it it’s soft, unique finish. It is then woven on a traditional wooden loom, entirely by hand and man power - no motors involved.

How has becoming a mother shifted the way you approach your business?

Becoming a mother, whilst running a business, has been a wonderful lesson in gaining perspective. I don’t sweat the small stuff anymore, and I am highly efficient with the limited time I have. I always feel like I’m up against the clock with my children both still being babies, so this has allowed me not to get caught up in the weeds as much. I really focus my energy on driving outcomes and propelling the business forward. It has also meant I rely on my amazing team a lot more, they are so important to me - I feel so lucky to work alongside a bunch of very talented, unique women.

How do you replenish your creative energy?

Taking walks in nature, meditating, visiting galleries, travelling, and cooking.
