Introducing R+D.LAB

Glassware designed with aesthetics and purpose...

R+D.LAB was founded by Jay Vosoghi and Sara Mostofi in 2006. A creative studio driven by a reverence for aesthetics and purpose. "We believe in the beauty of form, power of colour, and character created through honest traditions."

Their intrinsic belief in research and design is at the heart of their projects. Designed in unison, the two styles, Luisa and Tuccio, were named as a homage to Italian architect Piero Portaluppi's two children. Famously known for designing the Villa Necchi Campiglio in the 1930's (later the set for "I Am Love' with Tilda Swinton), Portaluppi is a muse for creating worldly pleasures of day-to-day living.

Providing experience and the impetus for collaborative exchange, R+D.LAB work with classic artisans and small traditional manufacturers. "Together, we work as a team to create highly distinctive products that are functional, sustainable and meaningful for modern life." R+D.LAB glassware is crafted from Borosilicate glass which is known for its pure and resistant quality, shaped with traditional mouth blowing techniques. The innovation of design comes from modern shapes inspired by aesthetics of rationalist and modernist architecture whilst respecting its functionality.

Here is a little insight into the practise of Piero Portaluppi. "The Villa Necchi Campiglio is the jewel is Milan’s crown. I first saw the grand building in the Italian film I Am Love (Io sono l’amore), which stars the beguiling Tilda Swinton and follows an upper class Milanese family through changing times and fortunes. The house was designed in the early 1930's by architect Piero Portaluppi and perfectly captures the history, worldly pleasures and day-to-day living of Milanese high society in the first half of the twentieth century." — Cate St Hill

Tuccio

"The house on Via Mozart, in the heart of the city, was designed for sisters Nedda and Gigina Necchi. Set in a large garden including a tennis court and swimming pool, the home features an Art Deco interior, with marble bathrooms, sculpted ceilings and a collection of 20th century sculpture and paintings." — Cate St Hill
