In Balthus's studio, all wood panelling and suspended time, the northern light pours through a large bay window overlooking alpine meadows. It falls across brushes, palettes, paint pots, sketched canvases, and rags still wet with linseed oil. The air is heavy with turpentine, threaded through with wisps of smoke, honey, and the distant cedar of the forests beyond.
In a room, it reads as deeply atmospheric — the kind of scent that suggests occupation and concentration. Suited to a study, a workspace, or an evening that calls for something with a little more gravity.
Spanish turpentine leads with its characteristic sharp, resinous clarity — heady and immediate. Texan cedar brings a dry, warm woodiness to the heart, while Indonesian patchouli grounds the composition with a dark, earthy depth that lingers long after the stick has burned down.
