Introducing — Innate, Towelling

Textiles inspired by the Australian landscape...

The Innate Textile Collection is helmed by two ardent disciples of fabric design, Fiona Spence, renown design retailer, and Wanda Jelmini, previous lead textile designer for the illustrious Italian house Missoni, in Milan...

Celebrating the powerful Australian landscapes through the work of art, Innate weaves together painting, textile craftsmanship, and luxury design to form a contemporary aesthetic that is unique to Australia: informal, relaxed, and sensual.

“The inspiration is never-ending in this extraordinary place that we live,” says Fiona, who believes that developing an Australian aesthetic is essential for one's own cultural understanding of who they are.

The first three Innate Textile collections are inspired by the artworks of prominent painter, Luke Sciberras. Sciberras’ work is firmly based in the textures, colours, symbols and history of natural Australia. ‘There has to be time spent in places and usually repeat visits over varying seasons to truly be able to wrest an image that is about a place rather than just of it,’ Sciberras reflected after a trip to Wilcannia in New South Wales.

The inaugural prints feature Ilford, based on the painting “Ilford Waratahs” (2022), and Territory, inspired by “Out of Katherine” (2016). A third release, Bilpin, based on “Rising Heat Bilpin” (2020) will be launched in 2025.

The Innate towel collection is produced in Portugal by a premium manufacturer of terry products, whilst the textiles are created by selected specialists world-wide.

"There is much to be said of the learning of a landscape's anatomy, the perfect make up of its geology, vegetation and tone and comes the celebration of the life that endures and lives in the animistic energy that is in any of these places and there the artist’s role is to make the invisible visible." — Luke Sciberras.
