The Pedestal Incense Holder is hand-turned in Auckland by Woo-Lam (Sam) Choi of Walk in the Park. Its form is the most direct expression of the Pawn Collection's origins — a tapered base rising through a turned sphere to a flat disc, the whole piece ebonised to near-black. In matai, a native New Zealand hardwood with a close, even grain, the ebonising process produces a surface that is deep and matte, with the timber's character still present beneath. A single hole at the centre of the disc accepts most standard incense sticks, ash collecting on the platform below. Each piece is turned individually, and the subtle variations that remain visible beneath the finish are part of what makes each one singular.
Part of Walk in the Park's Pawn Collection — a series of geometric sculptural objects that began with the form of a chess pawn and has since evolved into something entirely its own.
