The Raised Bowl is hand-turned in Auckland by Woo-Lam (Sam) Choi of Walk in the Park. A wide, shallow black walnut bowl sits above a stained London plane pedestal, the two elements joined by an ebonised sphere — dome, ball, and bowl stacked into a form that is as resolved from the side as it is from above. The walnut is richly figured, with the spalting and tonal variation that comes from timber chosen for character rather than uniformity. The interior, visible from above, shows the full depth of the grain — swirling and warm, no two pieces the same.
Generous enough to use at the table and considered enough to leave out when not in use. Natural marks and variations in the wood are not flaws — they are evidence of the material's life before the lathe.
