Uninterested in super-efficient, industrially produced objects, the French atelier Astier de Villatte make sculptural domestic objects that land somewhere between the dramatic and the humorous — so typically French!
Their Parisien team is interested in antiques, things neglected or forgotten, with an aim to create pieces that embody a certain spirit and almost feel alive.
We have just received a new shipment from the artisanal ceramic workshop that includes their collaboration with friend and New York designer John Derian — a selection of dining plates which celebrate springtime fruits and flowers.

“— Benoît Astier de Villatte”Our clay is interesting — it’s the clay that was used by the French sculptor Georges Jeanclos, our sculpture professor at the Beaux-Arts. Jeanclos was one of the first pensionnaires when Balthus was at the Villa Medici, and on his return to Paris from working with Balthus in Rome, he developed this clay. It was made available to us and we of course brought it to the studio.
