Across the face of this large raffia tote, a cast of creatures goes about its business in Sophie Digard's most personal illustrative style — a bird perched on a branch, a running pig, a donkey, an owl with wide embroidered eyes, a yellow crocodile, and smaller animals and plants scattered between them. The motifs combine embroidery with dimensional fabric and felt appliqué, each figure built differently from the next, the whole scene carrying the loose, unscripted quality of something observed rather than composed.
The body is crocheted from a blend of raffia, linen, and wool by the artisans Digard has collaborated with for years in Madagascar, its warm neutral ground giving the figures room to breathe. Every motif is worked entirely by hand — its line, texture, and character distinct from every other piece.
A generous, structured silhouette with short handles.
