One face of this crocheted wool and linen tote carries an entire ocean — an olive shark and white whale as the anchoring figures, surrounded by dozens of individually worked creatures: a sea turtle, a stingray, a seahorse, jellyfish, an eel, coral, and schools of tiny fish in blush, coral, teal, mustard, sage, and pink. The scene has the density and observation of a naturalist's field guide, each creature distinct in form and technique, the whole surface alive with quiet, unhurried detail.
The body is crocheted from a blend of wool and linen by the artisans Sophie Digard has long collaborated with in Madagascar, its soft pale ground giving the embroidery room to breathe. Every motif combines appliquéd fabric with fine hand embroidery — a level of craft that reveals itself slowly, the longer the piece is held.
A generous, structured silhouette with short handles.
