Individual velvet and felt flowers — dark olive, mustard, warm grey, slate, chocolate, cream, and white — sit three-dimensionally across both faces of this crocheted raffia bag, each one anchored to its own square of the patchwork grid and distinct from its neighbour in colour, material, and construction. Some are smooth velvet; others are felted or looped, their centres embroidered in fine detail. The cumulative effect is of a garden viewed very closely — ordered in structure, varied in every particular.
The body is crocheted from a blend of raffia, linen, wool, and cotton in a deep, warm speckled ground that gives the flowers a dark, earthy anchor. Every flower is worked entirely by hand in Madagascar by the artisans Sophie Digard has long collaborated with, the petals formed individually and assembled with the patience that defines her making process.
