Chinoiserie Landscape Pagoda 1760 Bristol Plate
The Chinoiserie Landscape Pagoda 1760 Bristol Plate carries the open, airy character of an 18th century chinoiserie original — pagodas and pavilions with yellow-tipped roofs sit among dark cypress trees beside stretches of blue water, birds dotting the sky above. The scene has the quality of a view half-remembered, sitting on the surface as though painted by hand.
Part of the Delft Collection, a collaboration between Astier de Villatte and John Derian, drawing on the painted pottery tradition of Dutch manufacturers in Delft — a craft with roots reaching back to the 12th century. The design is applied as a fired decal, archival imagery selected by John Derian and fused permanently into the glaze.
