Large Lion Stand

The Large Lion Stand raises a deep, plain bowl on a low pedestal foot, the base worked with a small rosette on each face and finishing in a set of clawed feet, in the manner of a lion's paw. The bowl itself stays unadorned, letting the base carry the detail.

Part of the Lion Collection, which takes its name and its paw-footed forms from Belfort's Lion, the monumental sculpture that has stood watch over the French town since the 19th century. The range runs from butter dishes and boxes through incense burners, vases, and footed bowls like this one, each carrying some trace of the animal.
