Cypress Trees is an original acrylic on canvas (455 × 610 mm) by New Zealand artist Max Thomson. Two tall cypresses fill the frame, their dense, columnar forms pressing upward against a pale sky. Below, deep blue-green shadow spills across a stone wall and the ground at their base, the darkness pooling and draping with an almost liquid weight. The composition is close and still, the trees cropped at the top, the world beyond reduced to a glimpse of sky and a distant treeline. Thomson finds the monumental in the immediate.
Born in Wanganui in 1945, Thomson has spent a lifetime observing the natural world with quiet intensity. Here that attention turns to the cypress, an ancient presence in the southern European landscape, rendered with the same depth and stillness he brings to the hills and harbours of New Zealand.
