Over There

Over There is an original acrylic on canvas (455 × 600 mm) by New Zealand artist Max Thomson. Dark, massive tree trunks rise from a deep green foreground, their canopies opening just enough to reveal a luminous landscape beyond — a wide, pale field catching the last warmth of evening light, with a low tree line and a softly glowing sky of amber and yellow. The trees frame rather than block, drawing the eye through and outward, toward something just out of reach. It is a painting about threshold and distance, the pull of what lies on the other side.

Born in Wanganui in 1945, Thomson has spent a lifetime returning to the New Zealand landscape as subject and source. Here that sensibility finds its fullest expression in a work that is as much about feeling as place, the deep shadows of the foreground giving way to a light that seems to come from somewhere both near and far.
