Large Long Villa Médicis Platter

The Large Long Villa Médicis Platter takes its oval shape from the Roman hippodrome, elongated and deep, with a wide border framing a plain white well. Ancient versions of this form carried portraits and coloured arabesques across that border; here, the same wide margin is left plain, so the shape itself, rather than any decoration, does the work.
