Mount Hobson from Mount Victoria is an original oil on canvas (300 × 400 mm) by New Zealand artist Max Thomson. Painted from the heights of Mount Victoria looking across the Waitematā, the work captures a moment of dramatic atmospheric tension — a vast, luminous cloudscape billowing in warm gold and grey above the dark, tree-covered slopes of Mount Hobson. A single white sail moves quietly across the blue of the harbour below, anchoring the eye amid the sweep of sky and land.
Born in Wanganui in 1945, Thomson has spent much of his life in Auckland, and the city's volcanic cones and harbour light have long found their way into his work. Here he turns his eye to two of the Waitematā's most distinctive landmarks, rendering a familiar view with the weight and stillness of memory.
Dimensions: approximately 300 × 400 mm. Original artwork, one of a kind. Artist: Max Thomson (b. 1945, Wanganui, NZ)
A unique work of New Zealand contemporary art — rooted in place, harbour light, and the enduring presence of Auckland's volcanic landscape.
