The Peony Chrysanthemum Bristol Platter is drawn entirely in blue on white — full-blown peonies and chrysanthemums arranged around a sculptural rock form, the brushwork ranging from fine etched lines to deep cobalt washes. It has the sweep of a much larger composition contained within a single generous plate, with enough white ground left to let each element breathe.
Part of the Delft Collection, a collaboration between Astier de Villatte and John Derian, drawing on the painted pottery tradition of Dutch manufacturers in Delft — a craft with roots reaching back to the 12th century. The design is applied as a fired decal, archival imagery selected by John Derian and fused permanently into the glaze.
