A single deciduous tree stands at the centre of the composition, its branches catching pale light against a soft, luminous sky. Around it, the park floor is carpeted in fallen leaves — amber, rust, and ochre — while deep green grass pushes through at the edges and a large dark trunk frames the scene from the right. It is a quiet, watchful painting, attentive to the particular quality of light that settles over a park on a still day.
Born in Wanganui in 1945, Thomson has spent much of his life in Auckland, finding his subjects in the landscapes and green spaces close to hand. Windsor Park, in the suburb of Windsor Park, is rendered here with the same contemplative attention he brings to the wider New Zealand landscape — intimate in scale, generous in feeling.
