The Balthus Floor Lamp by Astier de Villatte is a sculptural lighting piece imbued with history, artistry, and quiet theatricality. Originally designed by Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, known as Balthus, this lamp was conceived shortly after his appointment as Director of the French Academy in Rome in 1964.
Inspired by ancient lamps discovered during his time at the Villa Medici, the Balthus Floor Lamp carries an unmistakable Art Nouveau sensibility. Its slender frame is forged from rusted iron in Italy, lending a raw, time-worn elegance, while the softly glowing drum shade is crafted from resin-parchment, diffusing light with a warm, atmospheric presence.
Each lamp is handmade in Paris at the Astier de Villatte atelier, individually numbered and signed with both the Balthus and Astier de Villatte monograms. More than a source of illumination, this piece is an objet d’art — a bridge between classical antiquity and modern interior life.
Perfectly suited to refined living spaces, libraries, or bedrooms, the Balthus Floor Lamp offers an ambient light that celebrates craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and enduring design.
