The Peony Turtle Medium in Shaded Lake carries its shell as it should — as the centrepiece. The dome is covered entirely in individually cut velvet petals, each one shaped and applied by hand, packed densely in amber-gold, slate blue, soft grey and olive green, with a small bead at each centre. The surface has real depth and movement — it shifts as the light does, and no two views of it are quite the same.
The body, head and legs are shaded Lake silk velvet — teal, blue and green moving together in the same clouded way — plain and smooth against the extraordinary texture above. Designed in Germany and made by hand in India, each Peony Turtle is worked to Drechsel's own specifications, piece by piece. The petals alone account for a considerable portion of the making.
