The Madame Bovary Elephant in Shaded Blue begins with the velvet itself — dyed in deep indigo, slate and pale silver-grey, the colour moving across the surface in organic, clouded patches before a single stitch is placed. Into this ground, Drechsel has worked an unusually varied embroidery: large stylised blooms in yellow, coral and pink sit alongside passionflower motifs in cream and green, fern fronds, a large tonal blue dandelion clock, and fine trailing stems with small buds throughout. No two surfaces read the same.
Designed in Germany and made by hand in India, each Madame Bovary Elephant is embroidered on the frame, piece by piece. The tail ends in a small gold tassel — a recurring detail across the Madame Bovary series, and one that rewards a second look. At 23 × 28 cm, this is a piece that takes time to fully see.
